1. Morta and pestle are used for crushing and grinding spices, herbs, and other foods. A mortar is a bowl-shaped container, and a pestle is a bat-like object with a rounded end which is used to crush or grind the foods contained in the mortar. The pair is usually made of the same material, e.g. marble, porcelain, stoneware, hardwood, or stainless steel.
